Work/Play/Life

Ah, spring in the midwest.

Off, here and there.  Day trips over Memorial Day, to lunch with friends. Yardwork til you are sick of it. Bike rides down trails you have never traveled.

Up at 4:30 am to work on a Saturday, but the payoff is more fun than we should have, the rest of the weekend.
The anticipation of the upcoming summer, when we go til we can’t go anymore, and want more…

Briggs Mansion Ghost Hunt

Sunday evening, March 11th, we went on a ghost hunt at the Briggs mansion. It was built in 1862. The docent mentioned that, when the 3″ thick front doors were hung, Abraham Lincoln had been president a year. Wow…

We listened to history for 15 minutes, then wandered and explored for an hour.

Then we met back in the parlor and dining rooms, to listen to two mediums of good report, tell us their impressions.
Quite the evening, if nothing else, from a historical pov. A lovely old house, with more to it than meets the eye…

The Appetizer of the Year… Our Year…

Every  year, friends and family ask me for the recipe for our wonderful, amazing crab puffs appetizer… So, to make it easy on all of us, I thought I would just post it here, for whomever forgot, or wanted it, or, just found it…
So, here it is…
1 stick butter
1 jar Kraft Olde English cheese spread
1/2 tsp seasoned salt
1 1/2 tsp Miracle Whip
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1 can GOOD crab meat-not the cheap stuff…
6 english muffins- I prefer Thomas…
Soften butter and cheese in a medium to large bowl
Add seasonings and Miracle Whip
Rinse crab meat THOROUGHLY, in a strainer, til there is no ‘fish scent’.  Squeeze out moisture and pat dry with paper towel
Mix into other ingredients
Spread evenly on english muffins
Place on cookie sheet, and put in freezer for half an hour
Slice into sixths. At this point,  you can either place in a gallon freezer bag and save, or…
Preheat broiler
Place on cookie sheet, and broil til golden brown… 5-10 minutes.  Be careful, HOT!  place on nice plate, and get out of the way!!! They will fly off …
Enjoy!!!!

Jonquils and Gargoyles

So, spring is here in the Midwest. Warm, cool. Sunny, rainy. It changes, moment to moment. We do so enjoy the return of the flowers popping out, and the sound of the small waterfall in the pond, and Vinnie, the bouncer gargoyle. Standing by the pond, Feeling the sun on your shoulders, and hearing the birds coming out of winter retirement, is a real elixir of the soul.
It’s the little things that make life joyful…

Ah, snow…

We finally had a good old winter storm.  It had to come. We knew that. Doesn’t mean we have to like it…

The first real snow like this has a bit of magic.  It also informs you that winter is here. Really here.  Get used to it.  So, we have no choice, but to accept that the earth is asleep for the next couple months. On the bright side, no pun intended, the days will start being brighter, lighter, longer, in a few weeks.  All hail the Holly King.

Make the most of the Yule season, my friends.  It comes but once a year…
